At Austin Dental Spa, we understand how chronic headaches and other symptoms caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ, can make life more difficult. The temporomandibular joint connects the upper and lower jaw, and when the joint is disconnected, it can cause pain in the surrounding muscles that radiates to other areas of your body. Common treatments for TMJ Disorder include: medication, oral surgery, physical therapy, and a new technique called TruDenta®.

Due to the large number of people suffering from debilitating TMJ Disorder symptoms, our practice now offers the TruDenta® treatment program. This revolutionary treatment method can identify the cause of seemingly unrelated issues with your mouth, head, neck, and jaw. In addition to diagnosing the causes of your symptoms, the program’s modern technology can also help dentists treat them. Our patients enjoy the TruDenta® program because it is a drug-free, needle-free, and virtually painless way to reduce their TMJ Disorder symptoms.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms

Overuse of the temporomandibular joint, bite misalignment, arthritis, teeth grinding, or a blow to the head/mouth area can trigger TMJ symptoms. Our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Mark Sweeney, can evaluate your physical condition and determine if TruDenta® is a suitable treatment option. People who experience any of these symptoms may be a potential TruDenta® candidate:

The TruDenta® Treatment Process for TMJ Disorder

TruDenta® is a diagnosis and treatment program that combines therapeutic techniques from fields including sports medicine and prosthodontics, along with state-of-the-art technology, to identify problems and treat them non-invasively. During your office appointment, we will give you a questionnaire to find out your health concerns and past medical history. Our dentists will then conduct a comprehensive evaluation and talk with you about your symptoms. The more information you volunteer about your condition, the easier it will be for us to find solutions that may ease your pain.

During your examination, the force of your bite will be measured with a special diagnostic tool. Our dentist will also evaluate the balance of your jaw. Next, the movement of your head and neck will be analyzed to diagnose problems or inconsistencies in their movement. A precise digital report should then reveal any abnormalities. An evaluation of your teeth will also be taken into account.

Only after reviewing everything will your dentist make a customized treatment plan utilizing therapy and rehabilitation techniques often found in the sports medicine field. TruDenta® typically involves a series of treatments, each about 50 minutes in length. The process includes the use of ultrasound, advanced micro-current stimulation, and cold laser therapies. The total number of your appointments will ultimately depend on your specific symptoms and level of pain. Many patients have experienced significant pain relief after treatment with TruDenta®.
