When a tooth’s pulp (or inner soft tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected, a root canal may be needed to fix the tooth and relieve discomfort. Also known as “endodontic therapy,” a root canal involves the removal of the infected or damaged pulp, a deep clean and sterilization of the inside of the tooth, and the reinforcement of the tooth with a durable dental crown.

Our experienced Austin dentists understand that the very phrase “root canal” can cause anxiety. That said, we want our patients to know that root canals are performed every day, and typically are not as painful as their reputation suggests. In fact, in the hands of a qualified dentist, the treatment can dramatically ease discomfort.* If you believe you are in need of a root canal, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Austin Dental Spa!

Who Is a Candidate for Root Canal Therapy?

Many symptoms may indicate that a root canal is necessary, such as:

  • Gum swelling and/or tenderness
  • Discomfort while chewing
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Sensitivity to very hot or cold foods/drinks
  • Lumps or abscesses
  • Discoloration*

Please be aware that not every patient who needs a root canal will experience overt symptoms. For this reason (and countless others), it’s extremely important that you attend your regular dental exams and cleanings.

How Is a Root Canal Performed?

In most cases, we are able to perform root canal therapy right here in our office; however, we may refer you to a specialist if he feels it is necessary. The treatment begins with the use of an anesthetic to numb the area. We also offer sedation dentistry techniques (including nitrous oxide, oral-conscious, and I.V. sedation) for patients who are interested.

From there, your dentist will remove the infected pulp before disinfecting the inside of the tooth to destroy any remaining bacteria. After this deep-clean, we’ll seal the tooth with a filling material and use a custom-crafted CEREC® dental crown to replace the visible portion of the tooth and restore its strength. Our dental crowns are designed to match natural teeth seamlessly in appearance and function. More exciting yet, the CEREC® system allows our team to create them in just one visit!

What Does Root Canal Recovery Involve?

Following a root canal, patients usually find that their discomfort has significantly decreased. You will be given personalized aftercare instructions to make your recovery as quick and easy as possible. With this in mind, you may experience some swelling, tenderness, or inflammation as a result of the procedure, but these can generally be mitigated with over-the-counter medications. For the first few days after the treatment, we will advise you to stick to soft foods and avoid using the treated tooth to chew.

How Much Does Root Canal Therapy Cost?

At Austin Dental Spa, a root canal may vary in cost based on your individual case. Many insurance plans will at least partially cover a root canal, and we proudly accept a wide variety of plans at our practice. We also offer low-interest dental financing plans through CareCredit®, one of the most respected healthcare financing companies in the country.
