What Are Some Examples of a Dental Emergency?
Some common dental emergencies include:
- Teeth falling out
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A damaged or missing dental crown or filling
- Severe pain in the teeth or gums
- Jaw fractures
- Injury or trauma to the gums, tongue, or lips
- A dental abscess*
- Aesthetic problems
Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and any concern that alarms you can be considered an emergency. If you believe you are in need of immediate help, we advise you to contact us right away.
How Can I Prevent a Dental Emergency?
While certain phenomena (i.e., accidents) cannot be prevented, there are potential ways to lower the risk of running into a dental emergency. For instance, while engaging in contact sports or activities with a risk of facial injury, consider wearing a mouthguard; at Austin Dental Spa, we proudly craft customized mouthguards for our patients. In addition, avoid using your teeth as tools to open packages, tear open bags, or perform other tasks that may cause harm.
Finally, you can reduce your chances of dental emergencies by practicing good oral hygiene. We encourage you to eat a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals; brush at least twice a day; floss daily; and attend biannual cleanings and dental exams. Enlisting the help of a qualified dentist can allow you to consistently protect your teeth from serious concerns.
Can Dental Emergencies Be Treated at Home?
If you are dealing with a dental emergency but cannot come in for an appointment right away, consider these strategies. While the following are not meant to be solutions for dental concerns, they may ease discomfort or allow you to prepare for your emergency dental visit.
- Toothache – Rinse your mouth out with warm water.
- Swelling – Use a cold compress.
- Bleeding – Apply gauze or a cotton ball.
- Chipped or broken teeth – Swish with salt water and use gauze as needed; if possible, save the pieces.*
- Jaw pain – Apply a cold compress and avoid moving the jaw.
Furthermore, if you are suffering from any of the above issues, we urge you to call (512) 380-1300 or contact our office right away. If you call outside of our regular business hours, it may be wise to leave a message and go to the emergency room.
Never hesitate to get in touch with Austin Dental Spa; we’re here to help!
